Movie Trailer Mashups
Want to show you a few cool movie trailer mashups. Some of them are older than others, ball in all very fun to watch. They get better as you go, so if you want to watch just one, watch the last. Have any others you like?
Legend Alone (Home Alone and I Am Legend)
The Dark Elf (The Dark Knight and Elf)
Requiem for a Day Off (Requiem for a Dream and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

Things I'm Looking Forward To
Here’s a list of things coming up in the next few months that I’m looking forward to:
- Burn After Reading coming out Friday, September 12th
- Late September the Red Wings season starts.
- The Fabled City is the second Nightwatchmen album, it comes out on September the 30th.
- Lunatic Soul is a project from one of the members of Riverside, a band I thoroughly enjoy. Lunatic Soul has their debut album coming out on October 13th.
- Sept. 20th marks the date for a longboard meetup in Marquette. Super pumped about that.
- Sept. 10th the indoor city vball league starts again. Hopefully I haven’t crashed again on my longboard before than, and hopefully I’m headed up from it by then as well.
- I’ll be helping out a friend from church with a Youth for Christ ministry that he runs at the high schools, this will occur every Monday.
- Friends come back to school (even though I’m done with school, it’s still kind of exciting), so I’ll have a few other things to do. (Like M:tG, yay.)
Hrm, that’s all I can think of right now. I always hope things will cool down a bit so I get a bit more freetime, but time has taught me that that never happens, so I guess I’ll just enjoy the business I’m becoming accustomed to. Hope you are all doing well!

One Day as a Lion
It’s pretty much impossible to not love the raw sound that Zack de la Rocha emits from his talented mouth.

One Day as a Lion is both the name of Zack’s new two-man band, and the name of his new 5-song EP. While not as in the spotlight as much as Rage Against the Machine’s lead singer, ex Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore is the other half of Lion. I’ve been a fan of both of these bands for a long time now, so when I heard (admittedly just today, when the EP was released) that they put out some music, I had to give it a listen.
Pretty good stuff. Not Rage, not Mars Volta. The sound is unique; grungy, electronic, Zack’s scratchy-esqe vocals. The political lyrics that Rage has always had, and the experimental sound that Mars Volta is known for (not the same sound, but experimental nonetheless).
I think my favorite track is #4, If You Fear Dying. “Time is coming, rising like the dawn of a red sun. If you fear dying then you’re, then you’re already dead.”
It’s great to have some fresh Zack vocals back pumpin’ through the speakers. The last time I heard him was on Saul William’s self titled album, on track #4, Acti III Scene 2 (Shakespeare). Actually, now that I listen to it, the sound is similar to If You Fear Dying.
But anyways, One Day as a Lion is worth the five bucks on Amazon MP3. Go get it.

Instrumental (and Mostly Instrumental) Progressive Rock Bands; a Pseduo-comprehensive List
122 days ago
OK, this is how it is. My music tastes evolve all the time. This is one step in the genealogy of music I like. Progressive instrumental rock. Prog. Prog rock. Art rock. Avant-garde. Psychedelic rock. Or a recent description that I read that fits perfectly: “novel sonic texture.”
You see, I’ve always thought that voices are just another instrument to add to the ensemble. A few people I know really like having singers in the music they listen to. I appreciate good music without singers. I think it’s harder to pull off, and allows you to focus more on the skill of the instrumentalist and the composure of the song, rather than catchy lyrics.
Anyways, here’s a list that I hope to update frequently. Please check these bands out if you’re at all interested, and please suggest some bands that aren’t on here in the comments below, you’ll get credit for your find! I give the band name, a little desc. about my experience with the, and the links where you can listen to their music. I hate MySpace, but it provides some decent grounds to listen to music. (Hopefully sometime soon I’ll get ambitious and add some a pic of each band.)
Have at it.
1980
Found this band a while ago, really sweet music, wish they had more albums.
1980
a silver mt. zion / fly pan am / godspeed you! black emperor
Pretty good artists, I think these three bands are mostly composed of the same people.
A Silver Mt. Zion
Fly Pan Am
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
explosions in the sky
Explosions in the Sky was left off my list on accident for a while, but they’re here now, so it’s all good. This is definitely one of the best (and probably more well-known) bands, and definitely worth a listen.
Explosions in the Sky
grails
Kind of a more mellow-y sound, good music to chill to.
Grails
isis
Probably one of the more well known in the genre (I think).
Isis
pelican
This is probably the band that got me into this genre of music. Still really dig all their stuff, they’re just awesome. Well worth a listen.
Pelican
red sparowes
Second one after Pelican who I really got in to. Guitar players from Isis and Neurosis.
Red Sparowes
russian circles
Friend introduced me to this band just after I had started listening to Pelican and Red Sparowes. Very good.
Russian Circles
stars of the lid
Just started listening to these guys. Not sure if they will make it in to my regular listening group (a little slow / mood-music-y), but pretty good.
Stars of the Lid
this will destroy you
Good (fairly mellow, despite the name) stuff.
This Will Destroy You
Then some where there’s probably some more singing, but still awesome:
minsk
Love this guy’s voice, the rhythm of the songs really drive in my opinion. Another Chicago band (like Russian Circles).
Minsk
old man gloom
Some of this stuff is a bit more metal-esque, but not all. Love how he has an album titled Christmas.
Old Man Gloom
porcupine tree
Another pillar of the genre I think, awesome stuff. 4 Chords to Make a Million might be one of their more “poppy” songs (I’d guess, dunno), but an awesome song none the less.
Porcupine Tree
riverside
Along with Pelican and Red Sparowes, this has to be one of my favorite bands currently (my all-time favorite is Clutch, though not really this type of genre…). Really good singing and music all around.
Riverside
rosetta
Pretty high up there on my list too. Absent off of the Galilean Satellites album is probably one of my favorite songs of theirs (love the part at 3:10 into the song).
